As you drive into Taos from the south, the first area is Ranchos de Taos, probably most well known for the large, adobe church often painted by Georgia O'Keefe and many others, as well as photographed by Edward Steichen and many others. The Saint Francisco de Assisi church is tucked in an historic plaza, surrounded now by galleries and gift shops, and a restaurant. And each year locals are invited, and actually trained, to re-mud the structure because the weather takes it toll. The community really comes together, and many come to watch and feed those who are working. Off the main road are small ranches and farms, and an many homes.
